October 5, 2008 - UGOOD Establishes a Micro-Enterprise Project for vulnerable classes of the Society, especially women for the Sustainable Assistance for Income Fostering-SAIF Program a Micro Finance Model under UGOOD Rural Support Program especially for unprivileged Women in District Lakki Marwat, KPK.
UGOOD’s Micro Finance Project area is situated in Rural area of Lakki Marwat District, which is famous for its Livestock rearing and production; while local communities are involved in this profession since centuries and posses’ valuable indigenous knowledge and expertise in this respect. UGOOD also plans to train women in different sectors of development to make them both Economically & Socially Empowered by polishing their Human Resource through Trainings.
UGOOD’s SAIF Micro-Finance Model involves targeted communities in Livestock rearing and production by advancing small loans to Poor & Needy Women to purchase Lambs & Goats (of 9 to 12 months age), for Fattening purpose, by administering special inexpensive ration for 90 days, the ingredients of which would be available locally. After the fattening period, the animal is likely to gain 70 to 80% additional live weight. The animal at this stage is sold out in the open market where its sale price almost doubles, compared to its purchase price. All such business transactions are proposed to be carried out on 50:50 / 40:60 profit & loss-sharing basis between the investor and borrower. The profits such earned are to be invested by UGOOD in its on-going activities of Human Resource Development and Human Capital Development of the Clienteles.
General Objectives of the Project
- Establishment of a Micro-Enterprise Project for vulnerable classes of the society, especially poor & needy women
- Advance Finance of 2.5 Million to 125 Women; each receiving Rs. 20,000 for purchasing lambs & ingredients to prepare supplementary feed for fattening purpose
- Identify approximately 125 rural women to receive training in the care and fattening of lambs
- Train participants in small business entrepreneurship skills
- Help borrowers in purchasing and distributing lambs to participating women
- Conducts regular follow up and provide technical assistance to participants as required
- Conducts 12 institutional strengthening trainings in the targeted community
- Conducts 12 trainings on the legal rights of women in the targeted community
- Conducts 12 trainings on women’s participation in decision making and women’s empowerment.
- Demonstrates that the micro-enterprise project has helped women address needs stemming out from poverty & remorselessness.
- Demonstrates that women feel more empowered and are participating more in the community decision-making process; and that the community is more aware of women’s legal rights
- Develops a longer term donor base and fundraising strategy; reports to SAIF Program on this process and any positive outcomes
- Pays for staff salaries and benefits and project related transportation
- Provides SAIF Program with comprehensive financial accounting.
Project Model
UGOOD’s SAIF Micro Finance Model works simultaneously in Three-Dimensions:
- Poverty Alleviation of the targeted Communities
- By completing just 3 loans phases in about 12-15 months, the borrower becomes the owner of 5 young goats, which may cost up to Rs. 40,000 or more in the local market. This would help him/her in establishing a permanent source of income for his/her family.
- Skill & Human Resource Development of the Clientele
Skill & Human Resource Development of the Clientele
The profits thus earned by UGOOD from this activity are to be re-invested in skill & human resource development & fine-tuning of the indigenous knowledge of its clientele (more emphasis on females). Once UGOOD’s SAIF Micro Finance Model is implemented, enough funds would be available to support not only its present program activities but also for the expansion to other areas and communities in the future.
Source of Income For UGOOD
UGOOD’S SAIF Micro Finance Model will also prove a constant source of income for the implementing organization UGOOD & its program activities will never face the threat of shortage of funds. Once the cycle has been geared up, it will automatically generate enough funds for the implementation of its existing agenda for indefinite period and also add more features to its program activities.
LEGALITIES
All required legal formalities are to be fulfilled for each loan case such as:
Promissory Note equal to the loan amount is to obtained from each borrower
Two personal guarantees on stamp paper are to be obtained
Affidavit, duly attested, regarding timely repayment of the loan amount
Complete needed legal documentation to be done for each borrower.
INSURANCE
Each borrower would have to pay Rs. 100 per month as insurance fee for his/her animals to cover all expected risks.
MEDICATION
Local Veterinary Doctors would be engaged for periodic check-ups, preventive vaccination and medication etc to ensure safe and sound health of the animals.
SAVINGS
Any male or female community member, who enters U GOOD’ SAIF Finance Model, would be persuaded to make monthly savings – an essential pre-requisite to get a loan. The amounts thus generated would work as collateral for future loans or used for further reinvestments.
