Pakistan is the 5th largest motorcycle market in the world after China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam. With 7,500 new motorcycles being sold every day, Pakistan is also the among the world's fastest growing two-wheeler markets. Traditionally motorbike was considered as a masculine ride, however, the trend of female bike riders is slowly gaining popularity in Pakistan. Women on Wheels was the first formal attempt by the Punjab Government and Honda to launch motorbike as a female ride, which was a huge success.
In cities like Sialkot motorbike is the most popular ride both in urban and rural areas owing to being easy to afford and easy to maintain. It is not only used as a common utility vehicle but also for business transportation purposes for small scale vendors. In village areas use of motorbike is multidimensional, most of the people use it for transportation purposes between city to the village and a lot of people also use it to transport agriculture and farming produce. The trend of women bike riders is constantly increasing in village areas mainly due to the nonexistence or depleted state of public transport and availability of motorbikes in almost every household.
With the tremendous increase in the number of motorbikes as household vehicle, it is now the right time to introduce the motorbike repair, service & sales trainings to women so that they can also benefit from the enormously growing demand of motorbike repairs, service and sales facilities/workshops.
As per UGOOD’s survey, there is a good number of women/girls in village Gondal and nearby villages who are using motorbike as transportation vehicle. Under this project UGOOD intends to establish a model training facility to train females as motorbike mechanics. The training facility will be established in Sera Industrial Home & Vocational Training Centre ( A project supported by Embassy of Japan) . Initially a batch of 20 females trainees shall be selected for training. For the purpose of training as bike mechanics, young, enthusiastic and motivated females shall be selected from village Gondal and surrounding villages who are ready to break the barrier and want to get a skill that can change their life and their families life and also help open a new world of opportunities for the fellow females. Once a batch of fully trained female mechanics and professionals is available, it will be supported to establish a state of the art model workshop to be operated by women on commercial basis.
It is expected that the proposed facility will produce three kinds of trained female workers, qualified female mechanics for repair work, trained female workers for service facility and trained females sales persons for motorbike sales centres
