UGOOD launched a project “Empowering Home Based Artisans of Tharparkar through Crafts (EHBA-C)” with the purpose to Alleviate Poverty especially among the Rural Women of Sindh by way of Technical Skill Development and creating Market linkages to improve Marketability and Competitiveness of their Products. One of the objectives of UGOOD is to undertakes Skill Development Programs for Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) and establish Vocational Training Centers and Industrial Homes for the socio-economic development of women from vulnerable and unprivileged communities with the approach to eradicate poverty by providing those employable skills, facilitation for home based income generating activities and developing market linkages. Special focus of UGOOD is the women of rural areas of Sindh and Southern Punjab, especially the folk artisans involved in creating valuable traditional handicrafts. UGOOD is actively pursuing various community based activities and projects for finding out market for the beautiful handicrafts like Ralli Quilts and traditional hand embroidery crafted by the women, in addition to creating chances for education to their children, especially girls. Earlier in 2006, UGOOD initiated a project namely “Al-Noor Vocational Training Centre for Rural Women” in Village Gondal, in District Sialkot that was established with the funding of the Ministry of Women Development Government of Pakistan. The project provided Rural Women with a platform to development market based artisan work and earn livelihood for their families. The project is still continued and has so far contributed for training of more than 5000 Rural Women in past 8 years. Similar projects are being run by UGOOD for women based in rural areas of Sindh in Nawabshah and Tharparker districts. In pursuance of the objectives of UGOOD, various community organizations consisting of rural women have been organized by UGOOD in Districts Nawabsha and Tharparker of Sindh. These districts were selected by UGOOD on the basis of high concentration of folk artisans specialized in handicrafts like Chunri, Quilt and Ajrak in District Nawabshah and Qaleen, Chunri, Jal, Gaj, Shawls, Ralli, Applicants, Ajraks and Audd in District Tharparkar. UGOOD organizes training sessions for artisan workers based in the earlier mentioned areas focusing on creating awareness on marketability of the products and ensuring that the hard work of artisan workers is not eaten up by the middle man and the actual workers get benefit of their creations. Apart from training sessions, UGOOD organizes local and international exhibitions to display the work of local artisans through the respective Chambers of Commerce and Industry and market organizations.
